Cuba Night!

Cuba PartyOne of my favourite things to do is to host people at ours. A couple of weeks ago we were being pretty social at that dream apartment of ours. On the Sunday we had our friends Sarah & Kevin over for one of our epic dinner parties that we do every couple of months. On the Monday, I had some ladies over to nerd out and crochet the night away. And on the Thursday, we hosted Cuba Night! We had been thinking for a while now to start having people over for themed nights. I liked the idea of having people over for drinks and food but to somehow make it more than just a typical hang. To kick off this idea, we decided that it made sense to do a night inspired by Cuba, mostly because we were just recently there and we had picked up some great Cuban rum while on said trip. We invited a very random group of friends  (hi friends!) and it was a ton of fun. We had cocktails, ate food, sampled the rums and smoked cigars into the wee hours of the night. I loved it.
Cuba PartyFor food we had sandwiches which was kind of a joke but also they were actually good thanks to that Bar Isabel bread. If you have been to Cuba before, you likely got your fill of ham & cheese or just cheese sandwiches.
Cuba PartyFor the drinks, we stuck with the two best ones made from rum: Mojitos and Piña Coladas. Josh told me the recipes so that I can share them with you.

1.5oz Havana Club 3 year Añejo Rum
.75oz. Fresh Lime Juice
1 teaspoon of sugar
4-7 Mint Leaves (save the stalk)
Soda to top.

Combine all ingredients except soda and rum in a tall glass (the same one you’ll be drinking from) and crush gently with a muddler (7-10 presses is more than enough)
Fill glass with ice, add rum then soda.
Stick that stalk of mint with 3 leaves at the top in the glass and blazzzow!

Piña Colada
2oz. Havana Club 7  year Añejo Rum
4oz Pineapple Juice
1oz Coconut Milk
1oz Almond Milk
1.5 cups crushed ice.
Add all ingredients, ice last, to a blender. Blend on high for no more than 5 seconds.
Pour contents into a tall glass and grate a small amount of nutmeg on top. Blazzzow!

The rums that we brought back  from Cuba were all ones that you cannot find in the liquor store here in Ontario: Havana Club 15 years, Santiago de Cuba 11 years, Havana Club Seleccion de Maestros and Ron Varadero Añejo 7. Which was my favourite? I can’t choose because I loved them all.

We are thinking that our next themed night should be a Tiki one. Who wants to come?
